Leadership Beyond the Classroom

Last week, Redesign Schools Louisiana (RSL) hosted the Louisiana Department of
Education’s (LDOE) Aspiring Principals Fellowship Program. The program invited 30
aspiring leaders from around the state to prepare for a future principal’s job. The
program took place on January 18th at Glen Oaks Middle School and January 19th at
Lanier Elementary School. Representing over 20 parishes from each region of
Louisiana, the purpose of the fellowship is to equip participants with the training,
network support and critical skills needed to serve students, families, and educators
as a principal.

Nicole Jones, Principal of Lanier Elementary School, presented during the program
and shared, “It was great having Aspiring Principals on our campus last week. [It was
an] amazing opportunity to speak with them about my experience with
transitioning from a teacher to principal. Having the chance to collaborate with a
few afterwards was the highlight of my day.”

The cohort was led and instructed by the LDOE’s Director of Leadership Development, Brandy Garrett, and the Deputy Assistant Superintendent of Educator Development, Em Cooper. They focused on learning the aspects of quality instruction and how to implement that through leadership. RSL SUperintendent, Megan McNamera, says, “Working in partnership with LDOE helps move innovation and build connections among educators.  The ability to work with Director of Leadership Development, Brandy Garrett, and the Deputy Assistant Superintendent of Educator Development, Em Cooper takes the experience to the next level because of their compassion and commitment to students, teachers, and leaders.”

The group was able to observe quality leadership in action by visiting four RSL classrooms. Along with Ms. Jones, Principal Leroy Turner of Glen Oaks Middle School delivered messages about their duties as principles and pathways to academic performance. “Aspiring Principal program is an awesome way to provide educators with the opportunity to experience hands-on training as a school leader. I wish them all the best in their future endeavors,” said Jones.
