BASIS Baton Rouge Charter Schools Earn Top Academic Gains in Louisiana

The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) results for the 2023–24 school year were just released, and the school with the most significant year-over-year academic gains is located right here in East Baton Rouge!

BASIS Baton Rouge Primary Mid City is a tuition-free public charter school serving students in grades K–5. It is part of the BASIS Charter Schools network, which is well known for its academic excellence and impressive rankings. Earlier this year, a BASIS campus in Arizona—BASIS Peoria—was named the #1 high school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

From 2023 to 2024, BASIS Baton Rouge Primary Mid City saw a dramatic increase in students scoring at the Mastery or Advanced level on the LEAP test. The school achieved a 19% increase on the LEAP English Language Arts (ELA) test and a 16% increase on the LEAP Math test. These year-over-year gains are the highest achieved by any school in the state.

For comparison, state-wide average LEAP scores remained steady during the same time frame. Across the entire state of Louisiana, ELA scores only improved by 1% from 2023 to 2024, and math scores remained stagnant with 0% growth.

BASIS Baton Rouge Primary Mid City’s sister school, BASIS Baton Rouge Materra, also achieved excellent results on the 2024 LEAP test. In fact, BASIS Baton Rouge Materra is the highest-performing open-enrollment school in Baton Rouge. Their average ELA and Math mastery scores are far above the East Baton Rouge Parish average—74% vs. 39% and 72% vs. 26%, respectively.

In addition to overall achievement, BASIS Baton Rouge Materra saw impressive year-over-year gains. The percentage of students performing at Mastery or Advanced on the LEAP Math test increased by 14% from 2023 to 2024.

“We are so excited to see how much our students have progressed in math over the past year,” says Jared Lamb, Head of School at BASIS Baton Rouge Materra. “These results are a testament to the commitment of our entire BASIS Baton Rouge community!”

Marissa Carroll, Head of School at BASIS Baton Rouge Primary Mid City, adds, “We are so proud of our students for achieving these amazing scores, and we are grateful to our outstanding teachers for leading our students to these results. We look forward to keeping this momentum going into the new school year!”

BASIS Baton Rouge Primary Mid City and BASIS Baton Rouge Materra are both accepting applications for the 2024–25 school year. Applications for the 2025–26 school year will open on October 23, 2024. Both schools are open to all learners in East Baton Rouge, with no entrance exams. With an accelerated curriculum and nurturing learning environment, BASIS Baton Rouge Charter Schools prepare students for a bright, globally competitive future.
