How Can Visiting Your Local Library Help Solve Louisiana’s Litter Problem?
Keep Louisiana Beautiful and the Louisiana Office of the Lt. Governor are proud to introduce “Get Down & Clean Up”— an innovative program aimed at empowering library cardholders to take action against litter.
Local libraries across Louisiana are stepping up as hubs of environmental stewardship by offering students and their families an extraordinary opportunity: to check out litter cleanup kits for one week. Equipped with essentials such as safety vests, litter grabbers, trash bags, and clear instructions, participants are empowered to roll up their sleeves, hit the streets, and make a tangible impact on their neighborhoods.
“Get Down & Clean Up” not only transforms libraries into catalysts for community engagement but also provides children with meaningful developmental opportunities including:
- Environmental Awareness- Children can learn to understand the negative impact of litter on ecosystems and wildlife.
- Community Pride, Responsibility and Empowerment- Children can foster a sense of ownership in their neighborhoods and empower them to work and advocate for a litter-free community.
- Social Engagement– Children can develop connections and relationships among peers and neighbors while picking up litter.
- Problem-Solving Skills– Children can encounter various kinds of litter and situations that require adaptive and informed decision-making.
- Hands-On Educational Opportunities-Children can have first-hand experiences in understanding the importance of recycling and how litter negatively impacts their environment.
- Physical Health– Picking up litter is a physical activity that encourages children to get outdoors, be active, and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and exercise.
Go as a family to your local library and check out supplies to care for your community. Adult supervision is required for children. To learn more about this unique and exciting opportunity, click HERE.
