Students from Helix Legal Academy visit the Old State Capitol
On Thursday, September 8, students from Helix Legal Academy visited the Louisiana Old State Capitol to learn more about the elections process and what it’s like running for office.
This field trip was Helix’s third visit this year as part of a programming partnership with the National Historic Landmark. This event featured a conversation with former candidates who have run for office in Louisiana. Special guests, Dr. Beverly Brooks Thompson, former State Rep. Nancy Landry, and State Rep. Julie Emerson, joined the students via a panel discussion to offer first hand insight about the campaigning process and the importance of using your voice to vote.
Students are preparing to elect members to the Justice League (Helix’s version of student council) and Homecoming court next week, so this off-campus experience was a perfect springboard in that process.
